Annamaria Potamiti - Mysterious Things of Faith
Artist Statement: The title is borrowed from the title of a poem by J.Dryden. Painting for me is a meditative process during which I contemplate, remember and question my past, and my belief system. In this particular instance, I found myself being thoroughly intrigued by the image of the sole heron standing still on the beach on a grey day, looking out to sea, immobile like a statue for who knows how long. I see him often on our walks by the seaside. Is he questioning things? What is he contemplating in such stillness?

Annamaria Potamiti - A is for Beginning
Artist Statement: I was so happy drawing today, I am still happy which is unusual - what usually happens is that I get ecstatic over a piece and five hours later I hate it totally and absolutely...but not tonight even if I was not really using a chocolate brown, but a deep venetian red which gently glows on my paper.

Annamaria Potamiti - All the Light
Artist Statement: I feel this little watercolor stands between two worlds in a stylistic sense. It has got something I wanted to say. This time I worked with a tiny brush for the lines - that was fun and resulted in a wonderful organic line.

Annamaria Potamiti - Am I on Time
Artist Statement: Listening to Schuman today. The colors are not so bright, the line dominates, and the medium is watercolor. Hmm. I could paint and draw all day. I love this immediacy. I love the light and space between the lines. Many hugs.

Annamaria Potamiti - B
Artist Statement: Friday morning at the life-drawing studio. Our model had an amazing tattoo on her lovely back - to be honest I generally dislike tattoos - I know this is an extremely unpopular view but so be it - However, it doesn't prevent me from appreciating a very beautiful tattoo when I see one. But I still don't want to spoil the human figure which I love for its untouched form - (maybe it's because I was surrounded with all these white ancient Greek sculptures as a kid...) so my question was what to do with the dragon? So I rearranged the graphic elements and patterns to my liking...of course!

Annamaria Potamiti - Before you Build your New Home Daydream
Artist Statement: I was thinking about all the domestic themes and images I see all over the art world lately (chairs, birds that fly but also nest, house-shapes etc) and I am thinking it is like we are envisioning a 'new way of being domestic' - We are still experimenting with how we relate to our homes, our kitchens, our living spaces - technology is changing so fast but a lot of our basic human needs are the same - (do our needs change?) I can't remember where I read that 'new technology requires new customs, therefore new shapes and forms' - That really rang all the bells for me - (I wish I could remember where I read it) - Anyway, this is what the model is doing here - daydreaming what 'home' means to her.

Annamaria Potamiti - In the Summer you Rest your Feet in the Sand
Artist Statement: The theme of this work being "summer is...", I thought that for me with my many memories of hot Greek summers, digging one's feet in the scorching hot sand, and then madly hopping to the nearest water after! This is my first and most encompassing image of what summer is... That was a long time ago, but I guess the memory will stay with me forever...

Annamaria Potamiti - What if
Artist Statement: I am doing small, intuitive watercolors all within the theme of storytelling. I am stretching and pulling and trying to allow things to evolve. When I think I have lost something I take it further and low and behold it comes to a happy conclusion. I am using watercolor in transparent but also in thick layers like I use my acrylics. Very iconoclastic I know, but so satisfying! I am thinking about storytelling and how we get trapped in our own stories. A deep well here. The question of course is, can we re-write our stories and what does it take to do that?
